The Best Minute: On miracles, good ideas, and trying new things

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Glen Scrivener on choosing your miracle:

“Christians believe in the virgin birth of Jesus. Atheists believe in the virgin birth of the universe. Choose your miracle.”

II. Seth Godin on good ideas:

“People who have trouble coming up with good ideas, if they’re telling you the truth, will tell you they don’t have very many bad ideas. But people who have plenty of good ideas, if they’re telling the truth, will say they have even more bad ideas. So the goal isn’t to get good ideas; the goal is to get bad ideas. Because once you get enough bad ideas, then some good ones have to show up.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. What often holds us back from trying new things is not knowing enough about the new thing to feel comfortable trying it. We assume we can’t try it unless we know enough about it. But who says you need to know everything before you do something? The only way to learn a new thing is to do a new thing and grow from there.

II. Three tips for better focus at work:

  • Schedule your next workday at the end of your current workday.

  • Place your phone out sight and arms reach.

  • No spontaneous checking of email. Schedule email into your day and only check it then.
