The Best Minute: On eliminating nonessentials, reading, and getting more done

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Greg McKeown on eliminating nonessentials:

“Once an Australian nurse named Bronnie Ware, who cared for people in the last twelve weeks of their lives, recorded their most often discussed regrets. At the top of the list: ‘I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.’ This requires, not just haphazardly saying no, but purposefully, deliberately, and strategically eliminating the nonessentials, and not just getting rid of the obvious time wasters, but cutting out some really good opportunities as well.”

II. Patrick Collison on the value of reading:

“You could try to pound your head against the wall and think of original ideas or you can cheat by reading them in books.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. If you often feel overwhelmed by all you have to do in a day, try not checking your email or social media until lunch. You’ll be surprised how much you can get done when you don’t allow yourself to be interrupted for multiple hours in a row.

II. It’s easy to be upset with God rather than asking him to move on your behalf. Try praying for one specific thing for five days in a row and see what God does and/or how your perspective changes after consistently talking to God, rather than about God.

1 INTERESTING FACT

Our bodies deliberately send more blood to an erectile tissue between the two nostrils to increase its size and direct the air flowing through one of the nostrils. After a few hours, the airflow switches to the other nostril.
