The Best Minute: On emotional decision making, habits, and disagreeing with grace

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Karen Eber on how

“As you begin to listen to data, some different things happen. There are some misconceptions to understand. And the first is that data doesn't change our behavior, emotions do. If data changed our behavior, we would all sleep eight hours and exercise and floss daily and drink eight glasses of water. But that's not how we actually decide.

Neuroscientists have studied decision-making, and it starts in our amygdala. This is our emotional epicenter where we have the ability to experience emotions and it's here at a subconscious level where we begin to decide. We make choices to pursue pleasure or to avoid risk, all before we become aware of it. At the point we become aware, where it comes to the conscious level, we start to apply rationalization and logic, which is why we think we're making these rationally-based decisions, not realizing that they were already decided in our subconscious.”

II. James clear on the importance of good habits:

“The trajectory of your life bends in the direction of your habits.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. Be as gracious as you can with those you disagree with, you never know what ideas you believe in today that you’ll also disagree with 5 years from now.

II. God’s promises often including waiting. Don’t rush what God has promised because you think it has to happen tomorrow.

1 RANDOM FACT

Polar bears are nearly undetectable by infrared cameras

Thermal cameras detect the heat lost by a subject as infrared, but polar bears are experts at conserving heat. The bears keep warm due to a thick layer of blubber under the skin. Add to this a dense fur coat and they can endure the chilliest Arctic day.

1 QUESTION FOR YOU

How often do you miss God’s blessings because you prematurely decide what you are going to do?
