The Best Minute: On being effective, the difference leaders make, and being taller in the morning

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Kenichi Ohmae on being effective:

“Rowing harder doesn't help if the boat is headed in the wrong direction.”

II. Andy Stanely on what makes a leader different:

“A leader is someone who has the courage to say publicly what everybody else is whispering privately. It is not his insight that sets the leader apart from the crowd. It is his courage to act and speak up when everyone else is silent.... [leaders] are those who would rather challenge what needs to change and pay the price than remain silent and die on the inside.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. Leadership is not about always knowing what to do, but how you lead in the midst of uncertainty. People will follow a leader who doesn’t have all the answers as long as the leader is humble and clear about what they want to try and do.

II. We’ve all heard that God loves “us,” but we typically think “us” means everyone else because we know ourselves and our faults more than anyone else.

Try looking at yourself in the mirror and say the words God loves you out loud. You’ll be surprised by the impact it will have.

1 INTERESTING FACT

You are taller in the morning than at night. This phenomenon may be due to gravity compressing cartilage in our spine and in other parts of our bodies, such as our knees when we stand up or sit down throughout the day. While we are lying down in a resting position, the spine is said to “spread out” or decompress, so when we wake in the morning we are taller after lying in bed all night.

In fact, astronauts coming back from outer space are a few inches taller than their normal height on earth because of the lack of gravitational forces on their spines away from the earth’s atmosphere. When they are on earth again, gravity will gradually return them to their normal height.
