⏱️ The Best Minute: The BEST way to optimize anything

💡 1 IDEA FROM ME

You can’t optimize what you don’t start.

It is much easier to start small and imperfectly than to have a perfect start. It is starting that’s the hard part. You can spend so much time trying to research and figure out everything up front that you never actually start. The best way to learn is to do.

  • If you want to get in shape, start with an imperfect workout plan

  • If you want to learn pottery, start with an online video and subpar but accessible supplies

  • If you want to bake the perfect cake, you have to bake a bunch imperfectly to learn what not to do

Once you start, you’ll learn a lot. You’ll also realize you don’t need to have it all figured out to begin. You’ll even begin to figure out things you didn’t even know made a difference when before you started. Knowing what not to do in some ways is even better than knowing what to do.

But you can only learn that when you’ve tried things and seen what doesn’t work.

The best plan is the one you put into action. Not the one you think about.

💬 2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Paul Jarvis on why execution, not ideas, are what matter:

How many people have you heard say something along the lines of ‘I had the idea for [Amazon, Zappos, Google] long before it existed - I should be rich!’ But ideas aren’t a valid currency. Execution is the only valid currency in business.

To clarify, as this can feel like a fairly controversial point to make, an idea alone is worthless because it stands outside of execution.”

II. John Mark Comer on the value of your attention:

What you give your attention to is the person you become.

In the end on your deathbed, your life is no more than the sum of what you gave your attention to. That bodes well for apprentices of Jesus who give the bulk of their attention to him, and to all this is good, beautiful, and true in the world. But not for those who give their attention to the 24-7 news cycle of outrage and anxiety and emotion-charged drama…

We become what we give our attention to, for better or for worse.

💯 1 THING I RECOMMEND

Westree dual monitor stand.

I use a laptop and external monitor as a part of my desk setup. I also like both my monitors to be at the same level, which is a challenge when you use two different devices. I recently found this dual monitor stand and it is exactly as advertised (I actually have two, one for my home office and one for my work office). Both my monitors in both settings are not aligned at the same height. If your situation is similar to mine, this is a good solution.

🤯 1 INTERESTING FACT

Every day, a person consumes around 1 to 2 cups of snot.

More mucus travels into the trachea than it leaks out the nose, so most of this ends up at the back of your throat. This creepy science fact might gross you out, but it’s completely harmless and normal.
