The Best Minute: who to hire, tracking behavior, and learning people

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Warren Buffett on the qualities to look for when hiring someone:

“Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if you don’t have the first, the other two will kill you. You think about it; it’s true. If you hire somebody without [integrity], you really want them to be dumb and lazy.”

II. Hall of fame basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski on leadership:

“A common mistake among those who work in sport is spending a disproportional amount of time on “x’s and o’s” as compared to time spent learning about people.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. One of the simplest ways to bring about a change of behavior in yourself is to start tracking the type of behavior you want to change. You can:

  • Track what you eat

  • Track how much you read

  • Track how much time you spend on your phone

  • Track what you spend

Even if you don’t have all the information on how to change a behavior in the right direction, simply tracking it will begin to reveal obvious things that might need to change.

II. Successes are failures that people didn’t give up on.

1 INTERESTING FACT

Your nose doesn’t grow forever, but it does sag.

By the time you’ve reached the late stages of teenhood, your nose has reached its final form. But time and gravity have their own plans. Once it’s fully matured, your nose will slowly sag and lengthen as you grow older.
