⏱ The Best Minute: Why you need courage, designing you life, and taking action

💡 1 IDEA FROM ME

Most of the time we need more courage, not more information.

  • We know what we need to do to eat better

  • We know what we need to do to get better grades

  • We know what we need to do to attract more clients

While we don’t know everything, most of us know what we should do if we want to make progress on a goal. Often, it’s the courage to do it that is our bottleneck.

One of the biggest reasons we don’t try is our fear of what people will think.

  • Will they think I’m a failure if it doesn’t work?

  • Will they think I don’t know what I’m doing?

  • Will they roll their eyes thinking I have no shot at making it work?

Here is one of the best pieces of advice I have heard about facing your fears of what people think; instead of thinking about the proverbial “they,” think of individual people. The reality is that people have a lot going on in their own lives. Most of us really don’t spend much time thinking about other people. Instead of worrying about what “they” will think, consider what Sam, John, or Lauren specifically might think.

When you bring it down to the individual level, all of a sudden “they” don’t seem so scary. At the end of the day, does it really matter if John doesn’t think you can do it? Does it really matter if Lauren decides to unfollow you on Instagram because you decided to niche down on the content you share and she isn’t interested in that content?

Of course, this is not to say we should never care about what others think. We should get advice and feedback. But it should be from those closest to us and whom we trust. And most often, those people are going to support you because they want to see you succeed.

To gain more courage, don’t think about “them.” Go with the knowledge you already have and take your next step.

💬 2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Hunter S. Thompson on how to design your life:

“Beware of looking for goals: look for a way of life. Decide how you want to live and then see what you can do to make a living within that way of life.”

———————————

II. Ray Bradbury on the importance of taking action:

“Action is hope. At the end of each day, when you’ve done your work, you lie there and think, Well, I’ll be damned, I did this today. It doesn’t matter how good it is, or how bad—you did it. At the end of the week you’ll have a certain amount of accumulation. At the end of a year, you look back and say, I’ll be damned, it’s been a good year.”

💯 1 RESOURCE I RECOMMEND

Calendly for scheduling meetings.

If you are someone who typically schedules more than one meeting a week, save all the back and forth on trying to find a time that works for both parties.

I’ve been using Calendly for years and it has made scheduling meetings super simple. You can sync Calendly to your calendar so that it won’t offer up times you are not available. You can also block out the times you don’t want to offer as a meeting option. Best of all, the free version (which I use) does everything I need it to do.

🤯 1 INTERESTING FACT

We are born with only two natural fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud sounds. One of the most surprising fun facts about life: All other fears and phobias are learned or acquired later in life.

🤔 1 QUESTION TO LEAVE YOU WITH

Imagine all of your responsibilities, obligations, and tasks vanished overnight.

What would you miss doing? What would you choose to add back to your life?

These are the things you should be more intentional about planning into your life upfront so they don’t get squeezed out.
