The Best Minute: Life experiences, change, and bad ideas

1 IDEA FROM ME

One of the things you have a front seat to as a pastor is the roller coaster of emotions we experience in life.

On a recent Sunday alone, I had a conversation with someone who is excited about starting a new job. An emotional conversation with someone else whose sister was just put under hospice care and has less than 30 days to live. I met with another couple struggling with family strife on both sides of their family and wanted counsel. And chatted with another about their plans for Christmas as they stressfully try and navigate the holiday as a newly married couple who have to decide when to celebrate Christmas with both their and their spouse’s family.

It’s a constant reminder that, regardless of appearances, everyone is dealing with something.

As a practice then, a good first question to ask yourself when someone frustrates you is not “why did they do that” but rather “what are they dealing with”?

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Johan Maynard Keynes on how we often avoid the need to change:

“Most people, when confronted with a choice of changing their thoughts or proving there is no need to change, get busy on the proof.”

II. Keith J. Cunningham on good ideas:

“Shoes that don’t fit are not a bargain at any price. A good idea that can’t be executed is a bad idea.”

1 INTERESTING FACT

Penicillin was first called “mold juice”

In 1928, bacteriologist Alexander Fleming left a petri dish in his lab while he was on vacation—only to return and find that some liquid around the mold had killed the bacteria in the dish. This became the world’s first antibiotic, but before naming it penicillin, he called it “mold juice.”
