💡 1 IDEA FROM ME

Increasing the odds in your favor is the key to finding success.

So how can you make the odds more favorable? The best way is to keep showing up.

The more you try, your odds increase:

  • The more you practice piano, the better you’ll be able to play the song

  • The more you avoid processed foods, the more weight you can lose and the better you’ll feel

  • The more pictures you take, the better chance you have one you’ll like

The key is not giving up. You can’t run a marathon by only training for a week. My 8-year-old daughter has been practicing the piano for 3 years. She practices 5 times weekly and only about 15-20 minutes each time. Yet that slow and consistent practice has resulted in the ability to play the piano better than 99% of all 8-year-olds.

And it’s not because she has some inherent gift that most 8-year-olds do not, but simply because the vast majority of 8-year-olds have never practiced piano in their life. And certainly not since they were 5. She is better than most simply by continually showing up in small ways each week.

She very well may not end up as an adult in the 99% piano playing range, but that will likely be because she has developed other interests instead - not because she couldn’t if she dedicated the time and energy to it.

We become what we consistently practice in our lives.

The same can be true for whatever you want to find some success in.

The way to find victory is to stack the odds in your favor. So keep showing up.

💬 2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. John Mark Comer on the irony of being true to yourself:

“The irony of our ‘be true to yourself’ culture is that everyone ends up looking the same. As it turns out, sin is incredibly cliche. We devolve to our base animal instincts for self-preservation and pleasure - greed, gluttony, immorality, lies, power games. It’s the same story on repeat, from Homer’s The Illia to the morning news.”

II. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky on why you should keep showing up:

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

📖 1 BRIEF BOOK REVIEW

Christian Philosophy as a Way of Life by Ross D. Inman.

This book talks about the importance of philosophy, in particular Christian philosophy, and why it should be pursued. This book does that well, but doesn’t give the reader practical areas of study to go and pursue a philosophically Christian life.

Granted that wasn’t the point of the book, it was just to convince the reader of the need for it. However, I think that would have made it much better. My low rating is not to say it was a bad book by any means, but rather that, for me, I wanted more from it.

6/10

💯 1 THING I RECOMMEND

ACEJOY grill tent.

I am outside using my Blackstone griddle 4-5 times each week. This is the tent I have set up so that I can still use it in the rain. I’ve had it for over a year and it still works great. As long as it isn’t pouring outside, this is a great option and allows me to grill regardless of the weather (and it provides good shade in the summer!).

🤔 1 QUESTION TO LEAVE YOU WITH

If I was more afraid of not trying than failing, what would I try that I am currently avoiding?
