The Best Minute: On genius, being optimistic, and big decisions

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Amelia Barr on how to be a genius:

“Everything good needs time. Don’t do work in a hurry. Go into details; it pays in every way. Time means power for your work. Mediocrity is always in a rush; but whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing with consideration. For genius is nothing more nor less than doing well what anyone can do badly.”

II. Morgan Housel on being optimistic:

“Optimism is usually defined as a belief that things will go well. But that's incomplete. Sensible optimism is a belief that the odds are in your favor, and over time things will balance out to a good outcome even if what happens in between is filled with misery.

And in fact you know it will be filled with misery. You can be optimistic that the long-term growth trajectory is up and to the right, but equally sure that the road between now and then is filled with landmines, and always will be. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. Many times success comes down to your ability to endure being uncomfortable.

Living with the uncomfortableness of being below average for a time. Or for the uncomfortableness of putting yourself out there before you have it all figured out. Or the uncomfortableness of asking people to help you on your journey.

If you can’t be uncomfortable, don’t expect success.

II. When facing a big decision ask yourself this question; what will I wish I would have done five years from now? Even if it is the harder decision at the moment, it’s the one you know you will wish you had made in the future.

1 INTERESTING FACT

All giant pandas in zoos around the world are on loan from China.

The panda at your local zoo may look like it's at home in its cozy sanctuary. But unless you live in China, the pandas that you're seeing are just visiting. That's because every one of the gentle giants in zoos around the world are on loan from China and are the property of the Chinese government.

1 QUESTION TO LEAVE YOU WITH

Am I worried about failing because I don’t to fail, or rather because I don’t want to look bad?

P.S. Have you ever tried to catch a fog?

I tried yesterday but I mist.
