The Best Minute: on doing what matters, personal growth, and moving forward

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Derek Sivers on finding the time to do what matters:

“When you experience someone else’s genius work, a little part of you feels, ‘That’s what I could have, would have, and should have done!'

Someone else did it. You didn’t. They fought the resistance. You gave in to distractions. They made it top priority. You said you’d get to it someday. They took the time. You meant to.

When this happens, you can take it two ways: You could let that part of you give up. ‘Oh well. Now I don’t need to make that anymore.' Or you could do something about that jealous pain. Shut off your phone, kill the distractions, make it top priority, and spend the time.

It takes many hours to make what you want to make. The hours don’t suddenly appear. You have to steal them from comfort.”

II. Matt Smethurst on who God redeems:

“God saves only his enemies.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. It is easy to place the responsibility for our personal growth on others.

“My teacher should have taught me that.”

“My church should have discipled me better.”

“My coach should have given me better training.”

And while there may be some truth to that, once we realize an area of deficiency, if we don’t do anything about it, it is no longer on them but on us.

II. Progress motivates us to move forward. “Slow and steady wins the race” because trying too much to quickly leads to burnout and failure. Small steps of progress move us forward. When you stop progressing, you lose.

1 INTERESTING FACT

Roosters have built-in earplugs.

Considering a rooster's call can reach 140 decibels or louder, it might leave one to wonder how the rooster itself keeps from going deaf when that noise is coming right out of its beak. It turns out, the farm fowl have built-in earplugs. Researchers found that when a rooster opens its beak to crow, its external auditory canals close off, preventing sound from coming in and doing any damage.
